Obituary for Catherine Annie Smail

Beloved Mother and Grandmother, Catherine Smail, died in the late evening hours of Christmas day, 2017. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, January 3, 2018 at the United Methodist Church in Lander, Wyoming.
Catherine and her twin brother Kenneth were born on May 12, 1927 to Scottish immigrant parents, Margaret Mackay and Kenneth Finlayson.
She was raised and attended school in Lander along with her five siblings. Summers were spent at The Homestead close to Atlantic City. Her father was a sheep man and they followed him about the area.
Following school Catherine worked at Baldwin’s Dry Good Store. She helped her sister Mary Ella to attend nursing school in Billings. During this time, she met her future husband, Andrew. They wed and became parents to three daughters; Margaret Annie, Janet Mary, and Catherine Nancy.
The Finlayson family suffered the loss of Catherine’s twin brother when he was killed in the Korean Conflict.
She was an active member of the Methodist Church, a member of the Helen Hill Circle, and enjoyed volunteering at the Thrift Shop.
Catherine nurtured many long-term friendships and enjoyed making new friends. Her kitchen was always a gathering place for a cup and a cookie. She loved living in Lander, close to family. She loved going on rides with Shilo the family dog. Visits from her grandchildren brought her much joy.
Catherine is survived by her three daughters; Margaret (Lander), Janet and Peter Wolf (Laramie), and Nancy and John Beck (Riverton). Her seven grandchildren; Andrew Lawrence, Roddy Lawrence, Nick Lawrence, Kattlyn Wolf Rovey, Cameron Wolf, Andrea Beck Taylor, and Jared Beck along with ten great-grandchildren. Her sisters-in-law; Jacque Finlayson, Marijane Finlayson, and Jeanne Lee, brothers-in-law; Donald Wolcott and Martin Mazurie, along with many nieces and nephews, and many, many friends. Also Shilo, the family dog.
She was preceded in death by her husband Andrew, her parents; Margaret and Kenneth, her three brothers; Duncan, Kenneth (Korea), and Charles. Sisters; Mary Ella and Margaret Jean and son-in-law Rod Lawrence. Nephews; George Finlayson and Kenneth Wolcott.
Donations in Catherine’s honor to the Methodist Church or the Lander Senior Center would be appreciated.
