Obituary for Dr. James T. Summers

James Thomas Summers, DVM
February 24,1937 – April 19, 2018

James T. Summers, DVM passed away on April 19, 2018 at the Wyoming Medical Center in Casper. A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 19th at the Chapel of Mount Hope in Hudson’s Funeral Home located in Lander.

James Thomas Summers was born February 24, 1937 in Lakewood, CO to Hubert G. and Alice H. Summers. He was the youngest of four children, including brothers Robert and Hubert Jr. and sister Martha. Upon graduating from Lakewood High School in 1955, Jim attended Colorado State University and earned his degree in Veterinary Medicine in 1964.

Jim began his veterinary practice in Sundance, Wyoming. A few years later, he moved to Lander and bought the Lander Veterinary Hospital. After many years at the Hospital, Jim began veterinary relief work in several Western states including Alaska. Most recently, Jim enjoyed working for the Wyoming Livestock Board.

Jim spent many weeks each year in the Wind River and Absaroka mountains judging trail rides, hunting, fishing and camping with friends and family. He enjoyed fishing and traveling throughout Alaska with Terry, and in later years, with sons and grandsons.

Jim always had a bird dog or two running around with him and he was especially fond of raising, packing and riding his beloved mules. Llamas intrigued Jim for a while and several roamed his property much to the delight of visiting grandchildren and school children on field trips.

Jim was a longtime member of the BPOE of Lander and had many friends there. He was also an enthusiastic member of Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Red Canyon Chapter and volunteered for many fundraisers and Elk Foundation projects.

Survivors include his long-time partner Terry Summers, his former wife Judy Jensen and their three sons Eric (Becky), Tim (Janice) and Troy (Jeanette).

Jim leaves sixteen grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews throughout Colorado and Alaska.
