Obituary for Elizabeth Estey Grieve

Beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother and grandmother, Elizabeth "Betty" Estey Grieve passed away on Friday, February 8, 2019 at her home in Lander. Funeral Services will be held at the Chapel of Mount Hope at Hudson's Funeral Home on Friday, February 15, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. She will be interred in the Grieve family plot at Mount Hope Cemetery.
Betty was born on May 2, 1935 to Fred E Estey, Sr. and Mildred Nation Estey in Lander. Betty was one of five children and loved the Lander Valley she called home.
Betty married her high school sweetheart, John A. Grieve on October 31, 1952 in Rawlins, WY and they had been married sixty-two years at John's death in June 2015. They were blessed by three children, Debra Lin, John Clarence and Preston Lee.
John and Betty-owned and operated the historic JJ Ranch along the Sweetwater River, where they raised their family. At the J J Ranch, they ran a large cow/calf operation of Commercial Hereford cattle.
While living at the J J, Betty was a 4-H Leader for many years, teaching sewing and cooking and was active in the Oregon Trail Homemakers and the Sweetwater Cowbelles. She was an accomplished cook, homemaker, interior designer and Pilot. She enjoyed her family, cooking and the daily routine ranch activities. She was always helping others with their activities, as well.
In 1972, John and Betty formed their own cattle corporation, Holy Cross Cattle Company. In addition to the J J Ranch; they purchased three ranches on Willow Creek, twelve miles east of Lander. They moved their family to the Willow Creek Ranch in June of that year. On Willow Creek, they again, ran a cow/calf operation and ran Commercial and Registered Black Angus cattle. Their grazing rights were on the U S Forest Service Allotments above Willow Creek and as far west as Dickinson Park. They rotated the cattle through the beautiful mountain country and were truly blessed to live and work alongside their Willow creek friends and neighbors. They enjoyed their years at Willow Creek and made many lifelong friends.
Betty has always been interested in community affairs and served on various Boards. She served 17 years on the Lander Airport Board at Hunt field and 15 years on the Atlantic City Federal Credit Union Board of Directors, holding all major offices, including that of Chairman, for two years. She served three years on the Lander Chamber of Commerce Board and six years on the Lander Beautification Committee. She was a Realtor, who sold Commercial, Residential and Farm/Ranch properties in Fremont County and held her license for fifteen years.
Betty held a Commercial Pilot License and went on to earn her Certified Flight Instructor Certificate, Instrument Rating and Multi-Engine Land Rating, in a Seneca PA 340. She and her husband were one of seventeen planes, who made a Flight trip to Alaska in 1975, in their own plane, a Cessna 206 Turbo; with the International Flying Farmers. They crossed the Arctic Circle in June of that year.
In2006, Betty and John wrote and published a book, titled "History, Tales Friends Remembered". It is a community anthology of the residents and friends of the Sweetwater River Valley, as well as history about that particular area of Fremont County. It won an award from the Wyoming State Historical Society for that same year.
Betty is survived by daughter, Debra Lin Allen of Naples, Utah, son, Preston Lee (Lesli) Grieve of Winnemucca, NV, Grandchildren Andrea, Tanya, Chyenne and Justice Levi; Great grandchildren Chandler, Bradley, Brooklyn, Atlas and Thayer; sisters
