Obituary for Irene Lucille Brodie

Irene Lucille Brodie, age 91, passed away unexpectedly on March 5, 2018. A memorial service will be held at Bethel Lutheran Church in Lander at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 12.
Irene was born June 25, 1926 in Wichita, Kansas to Rudy and Clara Gehrt. She grew up in Wichita and graduated from Wichita High School in 1945.
After graduation, she attended Weather Bureau School in Kansas City. When she was done with her training, she was given a choice of where she wanted to go for work and much to her parents dismay, she picked Lander, Wyoming.
Irene boarded a train in Wichita for Rawlins, WY. There she was picked up by the Robinson Bus Line for Lander. On the way to Lander, the bus stopped at Home on The Range (now known as Jeffery City) and the bus driver jokingly told her that was her place to get off.
Irene met the love of her life in Lander, Jack Brodie, in 1946 when he was home on leave from the Navy. They were married in May of 1947 and were married for almost 65 years until Jack’s death in 2013.
After their marriage, Jack went to work at the Dallas Dome Oil Field and Irene left the weather bureau to be a wife and mother. When Jack’s dad passed away in 1956, they left the oil field and in 1958 they purchased the Shady Dell Ranch on Sinks Canyon Road where they raised Angus cattle. Irene had a busy life, raising five children and helping on the ranch. She was always hauling the kids somewhere as they were involved in school activities, 4-H, Junior Sheriffs Posse, junior rodeos and beyond.
When Irene’s kids had all left home, she went to work at Key Bank of Wyoming where she worked as a teller for 10 years. She enjoyed working with the people at the bank and meeting all the customers. She enjoyed playing bridge and rummy with her card buddies for 50 years. She was also a member of the Lander Valley Cowbells and the Borner’s Garden Club.
For 25 years, Jack and Irene provided the luncheon for the One Shot Antelope Hunt team members, guides and greeters on the day of the rifle site in. Through the One Shot, they made many wonderful and long lasting friendships.
Irene was a devout Christian and a founding member of the Bethel Lutheran Church in Lander. She was active in many functions of the church throughout her life.
Irene is survived by her five children: Diana (Mel Dahl) Brodie, Chuck (Anel) Brodie, Katie (Brad) Meredith, Mike (Launa Chrisiti) Brodie, and Jock (Susan) Brodie, her nine grandchildren: Sonya Heil, Tommy Heil, Amanda Brodie, Jessica Waldron, Cammie Edson, Cain Brodie, Heather Brodie, Jake Brodie, Sam Brodie and 6 great grandchildren: Kayden and Kolby Heil, Charlie Edson, Parker and Elle Brodie and Merritt Waldron. She is survived by her nieces and nephews: Tim Gehrt, Jennifer Gehrt, Doug Anesi, and Janet Mullins
She was preceded in death by her husband Jack, her parents Rudy and Clara, and her brother Floyd Gehrt.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Irene’s name to Bethel Lutheran Church, Westward Heights Nursing Home, or a charity of your choice.
