Obituary for John Arthur Sturgeon

John Sturgeon, 82, of Lander, passed away in Riverton, Wyoming, at Wind River Rehabilitation & Wellness Center on Friday, 9 March 2018, after a short illness.
John Arthur Sturgeon was born on May 30, 1935, in Glendo, Wyoming, to John LeRoy and Doris Ann (Wightman) Sturgeon. He grew up in southeastern Wyoming and worked on various ranches around Dubois, Wyoming, before joining the United States Navy in 1954. The majority of his naval career was spent based out of the Groton/New London, Connecticut area, where he served on the USS George Washington and the USS Sam Houston as well as instructing at the Naval Submarine Base. He retired from the United States Navy as a MMCM(SS) in 1973 after 20 years of service and moved to Lander, Wyoming, where he worked for a short time at the Wyoming State Training School (now the Wyoming Life Resource Center) before working for Al Robinson, Inc., until his retirement.
John married Delight Ann Nickerson in 1958 in Astoria, Oregon, where they were both serving in the United States Navy. They had four children, twins Shareen Gaye & Kathleen Gail, Shawn Patrick, and Kristeen Jo. They subsequently divorced in 1986.
In 1987, John married Patricia (Stroh) Newman in Lander, Wyoming, where they lived until her death in 2006.
He was a member of The American Legion Don Stough Post #33 as well as the Veterans of Foreign Wars. In 1986-1987, he served as the Commander of the Wyoming Department of The American Legion. During the years that he was active in The American Legion, he worked with the Wyoming Boys State program, serving at one time as Director; he also served on several National committees.
In his spare time, he enjoyed going to the casino and attending his great-grandchildren’s activities.
John is survived by his daughters, Shareen Johnson (Charles Keith) of Lander; Kathleen (Douglas) Ebert of Lander; and Kristeen Sturgeon of Lander; his grandchildren, Sherman “Tim” Johnson of Lander; Danielle “Toni” (Robert) Laird of Lander; Renee Roberts (Justin) of Sheridan; Samantha Sturgeon of Aurora, CO; and Stuart Sturgeon of Aurora, CO; his ex-wife, Delight Sturgeon of Lander, and 7 great-grandchildren, Trinity Laird, Haven Laird, Justice Laird, Tanner Krogen, Kirian “Avi” Krogen, Claire Roberts, and Izabella Sturgeon. He is also survived by his brothers, James Sturgeon of Florida and Henry Sturgeon of Texas.
In addition, John is survived by members of the Newman family including Rodney Newman of Florida; Sheri Meyers of Riverton; Bud & Rachelle Newman of Lander; Randy Newman of Lander; and Paul Newman of Colorado; as well as their children and grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia (Newman) Sturgeon; his son, Shawn Sturgeon; his grandson, Simon Sturgeon; his sister, Ann Marie Sturgeon; and his parents, John LeRoy & Doris Sturgeon.
Cremation has taken place and no funeral services will be held at his request. A private military committal for the family will take place at Mt. Hope Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will be held sometime this coming summer.
