Obituary for Velva Rose Baldes

Our loving gracious mother, grandma, sister, and auntie passed away on December 14, 2017.
She was born on November 1, 1933 to Jule Joseph and Gladys Hickey Lahoe. When she was an infant she won a beauty contest. She was very energetic and she loved her family more than anything. She loved to have her family come to visit her. She would cook and clean and prepare food for days because she was so excited to have them in her home. There are so many stories of “Auntie Velva’s” dinners. She loved her brothers and sisters, her grandchildren, nieces and nephews very much.
When she was a young child, she lived at Roberts mission in Fort Washakie for a while. One of her favorite memories she would tell us was about wearing of a red tam hat and walking along the “rock path” to the little log cabin. It was the church/school house and on Christmas they would light candles and have Christmas service and she thought it was so magical!!
Velva loved to learn. She attended Flandreau Indian High School in South Dakota. She very much enjoyed her time there.
After high school she met Alfred Baldes and they were married on April 30, 1954. From this marriage, Alfred’s three children became a part of her family. Alfred and Velva were thrilled when Kim and Shannon joined their family. They then moved to Bountiful, Utah where they made a wonderful home for their family. In the early 70’s they moved to Taylorsville, Utah and made a home there until they retired and moved back to Fort Washakie.
Our Mom had a hunger to learn and to be an independent woman. She put herself through beauty school, nursing school and received her real estate license. She was very meticulous in every part of her live. She was NEVER afraid of hard work and she and Alfred instilled that in their two children.
Her Grandchildren adored her and have many fun stories of spending time with her, they have many memories to remember her by.
Velva is survived by her children Kim and Mark Lambert, Shannon and Stephanie Baldes, Thumper and Diane Baldes, Maxine and Joe Martinex, and Shirley and Mitch Hassell. Two sisters and 16 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Alfred, her parents, two brothers, two sisters and an infant sister.
In lieu of flowers please make a contribution in Velva’s name to Help for Heath Hospice, 1240 College View Drive, Riverton, WY 82501. We thank them for the kindness and excellent care and compassion of our mother. We would also like to thank and acknowledge Kim and Mark for all of the time and effort for Mom’s care. Especially Mark, her son in law, who showed her kindness and compassion during her illness. He also could make her favorite fried egg sandwiches just the way she loved them.
We would like to tell people who are caregivers of a loved one with Alzheimer’s to take the time to acknowledge their struggle and treat them with a kind heart.
We know our Mom is getting her new red tam hat at getting ready to walk that “little rock path” to the little cabin and have a very magical Christmas with all of the people in heaven that she has missed and loved so very much.
We will have a celebration of Mom’s life at a later date.
